That One Special Place

When I was in my senior years at high school, i had a very special place high above the crashing waves of the ocean that I would go to when i needed to think. I had a friend that would come sit with me, and together we would share our dreams, our perceived problems (you know the typical teenager stuff), and just sit and truly enjoy the peace and tranquility of those times. Sometimes we simply sat in silence because there was no need for words. Even then I enjoyed and valued the peaceful feel of solitude, and coming away feeling lighter and having more clarity.

I'm a long way from that place now, but I still enjoy moments by the ocean. It still brings an inner peace. These days I have a different 'special place'. It consists of a small open building jutting out into the surrounding bushland, giving the illusion of being amongst the trees as it sits high over a gully. A sort of tree house if you like, always available, because it is the gazebo in our back yard. So very handy.

In this space, I can sit and contemplate the world, my world. It is a great way to escape the daily grind, feeling like i have ascended into the tree tops and wrapped in the safety of the bushland. There is usually a gentle breeze, the songs of the birds, and you can breathe deeply, freely and think more clearly.

Whether you share a special space with another or you sit alone, it can take on the feel of a whole new private world. It becomes a haven where you can kick back, relax, remove any masks you may have felt you needed to wear, and share your deepest dreams and desires. It is also a wonderful sanctuary to view problems, different situations or challenging questions from a different perspective. You find this will often reveal something that may have previously been overlooked or missed.

This time allows us to draw on a higher clearer energy. It allows for a temporary separation from the reality of life. It re-energises us, relaxes us and opens us up to new ideas. When you step back into reality, you do so feeling lighter, clearer and often more inspired and equipped to move forward.

If you haven't found your special place or you haven't visited it in a while, this might be the ideal time to either revisit, or create your own special haven. If you can find somewhere that you feel a sense of elevation above the world then choose that. And if not, close your eyes and visualise yourself in your perfect 'thinking' spot. When you have it, visit it often. Take a lovely cup of tea, your journal, some inspiring music and allow yourself to immerse quietly into the solitude of simple being.
