When things are going well and you feel on top of it all, life is easy. What happens though when you're not feeling on top of things? We can be so busy with the day-to-day doings, taking care of everyone else's needs, that often our own needs fall further and further down the ladder, and before you know it, you are feeling totally out of synch with who you truly are. And you realise you have committed a big 'No No' by neglecting the most important person... YOU.
There is often a lot of talk about the IMPORTANCE of self-care. So what is it?
It is NOT an emergency response plan to activate when your stress levels are through the roof! The horse has already bolted by then.
It is NOT about acting selfishly.
It is NOT about doing more or adding more tasks to an already overflowing to-do list.
It IS about letting go of frenzied schedules and meaningless activities.
It IS about letting go of unhealthy behaviours.
It IS about letting go of unserving attitudes like worry, guilt and judgment.
It IS about having BALANCE and FLOW in your life.
Self-care is an INTENTIONAL way of living by which our values, attitudes and actions are INTEGRATED into our day-to-day routines.
It’s being a WORTHY steward of the SELF – mind, body and spirit.
It's about being ALIGNED and CENTRED... on all levels.
It's about giving yourself PERMISSION.
If you cannot NURTURE and SUSTAIN yourself, you cannot be a provider and carer of others.
You will find that all areas of your life are interconnected, ignore one and it affects the other areas.
Start small. A simple daily practice of being still and breathing may be all you can managed at the moment, and that's okay. It's a good start. As you progress with your practice, you will work towards understanding yourself on a much deeper level. You will increase your awareness as to what is really important, and what you need to change or let go of completely.
AWARENESS is key! I cannot stress that enough. You will discover what lights you up, what brings you peace, what you love to do that will nourish you inside and out. Connect with your spirit as often as possible as this will greatly develop your intuition.
Listen to your heart. What do you need for you? Take some time each day to nourish you mind body and soul... then you will be on your way to living a life of true happiness and fulfilment.
Teach some of your simple rituals to your family so they can start building their own self-care practice. The earlier one receives this gift, the quicker it becomes second nature. It will teach a life long lesson of awareness, self worth and self love.
In today's world we often equate being really busy with getting things accomplished. The thing is, whilst you can achieve a great deal doing non-stop, you also allow for your stress levels to increase, you feel pretty flat and eventually you're exhausted. When you take time for yourself, to slow down and take some time to align yourself, you will find that you get a lot more done in a shorter amount of time because you are acting with a clear mind and a relaxed energy.
Make sure you do something each day to fill your cup to overflowing. Then you can give to others from the overflow and still have a full cup for yourself. Win/win! If you have no idea where to start, take the FREE Self-Care Assessment.
